The Pulpit Commentary - Acts 9:40

Turning for turning him, A.V.; he said for said, A.V. Peter's action in putting them all forth seems to have been framed on the model of that scene at which he had been present when Jesus raised the daughter of Jairus. Privacy for the more earnest concentrated prayer was doubtless what he sought. Kneeled down; θεὶς τὰ γόνατα . The same expression as in Acts 7:60 ; Acts 20:36 ; Acts 21:5 ; Luke 22:41 . It occurs also in Mark 15:19 . Tabitha, arise . Exactly the... read more

The Pulpit Commentary - Acts 9:40

Apostolic and other resurrections. There are only eight cases of resurrection from the dead recorded in the Bible. Elijah raised the widow's son at Zarephath. Elisha raised the Shunammite's son. By contact with Elisha's body in his grave, a dead man was quickened. Our Lord raised the daughter of Jairus; the son of the widow of Nain; and Lazarus of Bethany. St. Peter raised the charitable Dorcas. St. Paul restored the fallen Eutychus. Keeping these cases in mind, we may compare them with... read more

But Peter put them all forth - From the room. See a similar case in Matthew 9:25. Why this was done is not said. Perhaps it was because he did not wish to appear as if seeking publicity. If done in the presence of many persons, it might seem like ostentation. Others suppose it was that he might offer more fervent prayer to God than he would be willing they should witness Compare 2 Kings 4:33.Tabitha, arise - Compare Mark 5:41-42. read more

Acts 9:39-41. Then Peter arose and went with them Doubtless God inclined him so to do, intending to work an extraordinary miracle by him, for the manifestation of his truth and glory. And when he was come To Tabitha’s house; they brought him into the upper chamber Where she was laid out. And all the widows Who had been relieved by her benevolence; stood by him weeping, showing the coats, &c. Here was no need of mourning women to be hired: the death of this woman was a common... read more

Bridgeway Bible Commentary - Acts 9:32-43

9:32-12:25 JERUSALEM AND THE GENTILESPeter in Lydda and Joppa (9:32-43)While God was preparing Paul for the Gentile mission ahead, he was also broadening the vision of Peter and other church leaders. Peter moved out from Jerusalem and visited some of the Christian groups that had sprung up in the semi-Gentile coastal plain area where Philip had preached earlier (cf. 8:40). At Lydda he healed a paralyzed man (32-35) and at nearby Joppa he raised a woman to life. In both places news of the... read more

But Peter put them all forth, and kneeled down, and prayed; and, turning to the body, he said, Tabitha, arise. And she opened her eyes; and when she saw Peter she sat up.Peter had been well schooled at the feet of the Master. Just as our Lord had done when Jairus' daughter was raised, Peter cleared the room. He went down upon his knees; and from this is a legitimate inference that in this also he emulated the action of the Master, because it is clear enough from John's gospel that all of Jesus'... read more

Thomas Coke Commentary on the Holy Bible - Acts 9:40

Acts 9:40. But Peter put them all forth,— Herein the servant followed not only the path, but the very steps of his Lord, in dismissing all witnesses, that nothing might look like vain-glory, that nothing might interrupt the fervour of that address which he was to pour out before God. First, he bends his knees in prayer to the Lord of life; and knowing certainly by a divine impulse that his prayer was heard, he directs his voice with a divine efficacy to the dead: but who can fully conceive the... read more

Commentary Critical and Explanatory on the Whole Bible - Acts 9:40

40-43. Peter put them all forth, and kneeled down—the one in imitation of his Master's way ( :-; and compare 2 Kings 4:33); the other, in striking contrast with it. The kneeling became the lowly servant, but not the Lord Himself, of whom it is never once recorded that he knelt in the performance of a miracle. opened her eyes, and when she saw Peter, she sat up—The graphic minuteness of detail here imparts to the narrative an air of charming reality. read more

1. Peter’s ministry in Lydda and Joppa 9:32-43Luke now returned to Peter’s continuing ministry in Judea. Luke apparently recorded the healing of Aeneas and the raising of Tabitha to show that the gospel was being preached effectively in a region of Palestine that both Jews and Gentiles occupied. Peter, the apostle to the Jews, was responsible for its advancing farther into Gentile territory. Luke thereby helped his readers see the equality of Gentiles and Jews in the church as it continued to... read more
