The Pulpit Commentary - Ephesians 5:2

The walk of love. We are bound to love one another. I. THIS WAS THE GREAT DUTY OF THE LAW . "All the Law is fulfilled in one word, even in this, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself' ( Galatians 5:14 ). "The end of the commandment is love" ( 1 Timothy 1:5 ). All our duty to our neighbor is summed up in love. Love supplies the motive-power to all right relations with our fellow-men. II. THIS WAS THE NEW COMMANDMENT OF CHRIST , "A new commandment... read more

The Pulpit Commentary - Ephesians 5:2

The pattern of Christian love. "As Christ also hath loved us, and hath given himself for us an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet-smelling savor." Jesus was an example of love in his life, for he went about every day doing good ( Acts 10:38 ). But it is to his suffering of death that the apostle points us for the most sublime and impressive illustration of his love. The words suggest many pregnant thoughts. I. WHO OFFERED HIMSELF ? It was Christ, the only begotten Son... read more

The Pulpit Commentary - Ephesians 5:2

The sacrifice of Christ. I. THE SACRIFICE OF CHRIST WAS VOLUNTARY . He gave himself. He said he had power—right as well as ability—to lay down his life ( John 10:18 ). Had the sacrifice of Christ not been the free giving of himself, it would have been like the human sacrifices of the heathen—a fearful deed in those who slew him and of no import to any one else. The essence of the sacrifice, all that gave to it propitiatory efficacy, was the willingness of the Sufferer who... read more

And walk in love - That is, let your lives be characterized by love; let that be evinced in all your deportment and conversation; see notes on John 13:34.As Christ also hath loved us - We are to evince the same love for one another which he has done for us. He showed his love by giving himself to die for us, and we should evince similar love to one another; 1 John 3:16.And hath given himself for us - “As Christ also hath loved us.” We are to evince the same love for one another which he has... read more

Ephesians 5:1-2. Therefore Because you are forgiven by God, and have been so much loved; (Ephesians 4:32;) be ye followers Μιμηται , imitators, of God In loving and forgiving; as dear Αγαπητα , beloved, children Whom he hath not only forgiven after many and great offences, but hath taken into his peculiar favour, adopted into his family, constituted his heirs, and joint heirs with his beloved Son, and inspired with blessed and lively hopes of unspeakable glory and felicity for ever.... read more

Bridgeway Bible Commentary - Ephesians 5:1-20

More about the new standards (5:1-20)Just as children follow the example of their parents, so Christians must follow the example of their heavenly Father. Their love, then, will not be mere words, but will show itself by self-sacrifice, just as Christ’s love did (5:1-2).Converted pagans had a special problem in that many of the sinful practices they once engaged in were still widespread in the society in which they lived. One way to overcome the temptation to such practices was not even to... read more

Thomas Coke

Thomas Coke Commentary on the Holy Bible - Ephesians 5:2

Ephesians 5:2. An offering, &c.— Some think that the words προσφορα and θυσια are used in reference to the peace-offering and the sin-offering, as the truth of both is in the sacrifice of Christ, which appeased God, and obtains the blessings consequent upon his favour. The words possibly are here used in conjunction, to express the completeness of the sacrifice:—of a sweet-smelling savour, was, in scripture phrase, such a sacrifice as God accepted and was pleased with. See Genesis 8:21. read more

2. And—in proof that you are so. walk in love—resuming Ephesians 4:1, "walk worthy of the vocation." as Christ . . . loved us—From the love of the Father he passes to the love of the Son, in whom God most endearingly manifests His love to us. given himself for us—Greek, "given Himself up (namely, to death, Ephesians 4:1- :) for us," that is, in our behalf: not here vicarious substitution, though that is indirectly implied, "in our stead." 3. Walking in love 5:1-6In addition to calling his readers to walk in unity (Ephesians 4:1) and holiness (Ephesians 4:17), Paul urged them to walk in love (Ephesians 5:2). He first advocated positive love (Ephesians 5:1-2) and then negatively warned to abstain from evil (Ephesians 5:3-6). read more
