Expository Notes of Dr. Thomas Constable - Ezra 8:1-14

The leading men who returned 8:1-14The descendants of the priestly and royal families in Israel appear first in this list (Ezra 8:2-3). Then the names of the rest of the Jews follow. A comparison of Ezra 8:3-14 with Ezra 2:3-15 shows that Ezra’s companions were mainly the relatives of those Jews who had returned 80 years earlier under Sheshbazzar. The one exception was Joab’s family (Ezra 8:9). read more

John Dummelow's Commentary on the Bible - Ezra 8:1-36

Particulars of Ezra’s Company1. Them that went up] The sum of the numbers given is 1,496. Only males are mentioned, and if no women accompanied them, the absence of such doubtless increased the tendency that the people manifested to intermarry with heathen families. 2. Hattush] This should be connected closely with the following clause, Hattush being grandson of Shecaniah: 1 Chronicles 3:22. 3. Of the sons of Pharosh] Most of the families in this list also appear (with some variations) in Ezra... read more

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers - Ezra 8:2-3

(2, 3) According to 1 Chronicles 3:22, Huttush was a descendant of David, and grandson of Shechaniab. The difficulty of the text therefore may probably be best solved by punctuating thus: “Of the sons of David. Hattush of the sons of Shechaniab. Of the sons of Pharosh, Zechariah.” read more

L. M. Grant's Commentary on the Bible - Ezra 8:1-36

A LIST OF EZRA'S COMPANIONS (vv. 1-14) Those who voluntarily came to accompany Ezra to Jerusalem are recorded here, the men numbering almost 1500. Women also must have been present, but are not mentioned. Not that God thinks less of the faith of women, for He often commends them for their devotedness, but since the emphasis here is on publication, and the women do not hold a public place, there was no reason to refer to them.Children too are not mentioned. In fact, the emphasis inverse 1 is... read more

Hawker's Poor Man's Commentary - Ezra 8:2-14

The whole number is fourteen hundred ninety and six, beside the heads of the houses themselves. A goodly company! How sweet is the gospel proclamation, when made successful to win souls unto Christ. Was it not in allusion to this, both in the Jewish and gospel church, that the prophet cried out, The Lord shall make an highway for the remnant of his people, which shall be left from Assyria; like as it was to Israel in the day that he came up out of the land of Egypt. Isaiah 11:16 . read more

1-20 Ezra assembles the outcasts of Israel, and the dispersed of Judah. God raised up the spirits of a small remnant to accompany him. What a pity that good men should omit a good work, for want of being spoken to! read more
