Call together the archers against Babylon ,.... The Medes and Persians, who were well skilled in archery, especially the Elamites; see Isaiah 22:6 ; hence Horace F4 Carmin. l. 2. Ode 16. makes mention of "Medi pharetra"; and Cyrus in Xenophon F5 Cyropaedia, l. 2. c. 1. says, that he had under his command sixty thousand men that wore targets and were archers; See Gill on Jeremiah 50:9 . Here, 1. The forces are mustered and commissioned to destroy Babylon, and every thing is got ready for a descent upon that potent kingdom: Go up against that land by Merathaim, the country of the Mardi, that lay part in Assyria and part in Armenia; and go among the inhabitants of Pekod, another country (mentioned Ezek. 23:23) which Cyrus took in his way to Babylon.
