The Pulpit Commentary - Job 32:8

But there is a spirit in man . But, after all, it is not mere age and experience that make men wise and able to teach others. "There is a spirit in man" (see Genesis 2:7 ); and it is according as this spirit is or is not enlightened from on high that men speak words of wisdom or the contrary. The inspiration of the Almighty —this it is, which— giveth them understanding . And such inspiration it is in the power of God to bestow, as he pleases, on the old or on the young, on the great of... read more

The Pulpit Commentary - Job 32:8

The common inspiration of man. Elihu here utters a great and daring thought. He turns from the dogmas of the ancients to the present Divine inspiration; from the teaching of authority to the voice of truth in the heart of man. I. THERE IS A DIVINE INSPIRATION OF MAN . Elihu affirms its existence. The old men had grown stiff in thought, worldly, and dim-sighted. If ever they had quivered beneath the touch of inspiration this was in bygone days, and they had forgotten the... read more

The Pulpit Commentary - Job 32:9

Great men are not always wise: neither do the aged (always) understand judgment . Elihu lays down the universal law, before applying it to the particular instance. True wisdom is from God, not from observation and experience. Therefore many aged men are not wise; many experienced men, great in position, versed in affairs, do not possess understanding. It is a trite remark, "With how little wisdom the world is governed!" read more

The Pulpit Commentary - Job 32:10

Therefore I said, Hearken to me . Elihu evidently claims, not exactly what is ordinarily understood by inspiration, but that his spirit, is divinely enlightened, and that therefore he is more competent to take part in the controversy that has been raised than many of the aged. I also will show mine opinion . "I also," or "even I"— i.e. I, young as I am, "will show my opinion," or "utter what I know on the subject." Elihu does not speak of his convictions as mere "opinions," but claims to... read more

Albert Barnes' Notes on the Whole Bible - Job 32:8

But there is a spirit in man - This evidently refers to a spirit imparted from above; a spirit from the Almighty. The parallelism seems to require this, for it responds to the phrase “the inspiration of the Almighty” in the other hemistich. The Hebrew expression here also seems to require this interpretation. It is, הוא רוח rûach hû', the Spirit itself; meaning the very Spirit that gives wisdom, or the Spirit of inspiration. He had said, in the previous verse, that it was reasonable to expect... read more

Albert Barnes' Notes on the Whole Bible - Job 32:9

Great men are not always wise - Though wisdom may in general be looked for in them, yet it is not universally true. Great men here denote those who are distinguished for rank, age, authority.Neither do the aged understand judgment - That is, they do not always understand it. The word judgment here means right, truth. They do not always understand what is the exact truth in regard to the divine administration. This is an apology for what he was about to say, and for the fact that one so young... read more

Joseph Benson's Commentary of the Old and New Testaments - Job 32:5-8

Job 32:5-8. When Elihu saw, &c., then his wrath was kindled When he saw that none of these three offered to reply, but sat as men that knew not what to say, he was not able to hold his peace any longer. With the next words the metre begins again, the preceding part of this chapter being in prose. I am young, and ye are very old I have considered all this time my own youth and your aged experience; wherefore I was afraid Of being thought forward and presumptuous, and so have hitherto... read more

Joseph Benson's Commentary of the Old and New Testaments - Job 32:9-10

Job 32:9-10. Great men are not always wise That is, men of eminence for age, or learning, or dignity and power, such as Job’s three friends seem to have been; neither do the aged (always) understand judgment What is just and right; or the judgment of God, and the methods and reasons of his administrations. Therefore I said Within myself, and I now say it with my mouth; Hearken to me Thou Job especially, who art more nearly concerned, and thy friends with thee. I also will show my... read more

Bridgeway Bible Commentary - Job 32:1-22

32:1-37:24ELIHU’S ARGUMENTSReasons why Elihu must speak (32:1-22)People came for various reasons to see Job. Many were merely curious, wanting to see the former leading judge, honoured citizen and respected wise man who was now decaying at the city garbage dump. Some came to mock, others to listen to the debate. Among this latter group was an intelligent young man named Elihu. As the debate progressed, Elihu grew restless and angry. He was angry at Job for his self-righteous assertions, and... read more
