The Pulpit Commentary - Luke 22:8

Go and prepare us the Passover, that we may eat . The three synoptists unite in describing this solemn meal, for which Peter and John were sent to prepare, as the ordinary Paschal Supper. But, on comparing the record of the same Supper given by St. John, we are irresistibly led to a different conclusion; for we read that on the following day those who led Jesus into the Praetorium went not in themselves, "lest they should be defiled; but that they might eat the Passover " ( John 18:28 ... read more

Luke 22:7-13. Then came the day of unleavened bread, when the passover must be killed They called the day on which the passover was killed, one of the days of unleavened bread, and the first day thereof, because it was preparatory to that feast; though, properly speaking, the first day began with the passover-supper. This appears likewise from Josephus, who, making use of the vulgar computation, tells us, that the feast of unleavened bread lasted eight days; whereas, in the law, it was... read more

139. Jesus prepares the Passover (Matthew 26:17-19; Mark 14:12-16; Luke 22:7-13)Normally the Jews killed the sacrificial lamb on the afternoon of Passover day, and ate it together in a meal that night (cf. Exodus 12:6,Exodus 12:8). Jesus knew he was to die as the sacrificial lamb on Passover day, and therefore he prepared the meal a day earlier. He would eat the meal with his disciples the evening before Passover, but probably without a lamb, since he himself was to be the lamb.Knowing that the... read more

The supper was held after sundown and technically on the 14th by Jewish reckoning. read more

And he sent Peter and John, saying, Go make ready for us the passover, that we may eat.It is not actually the Passover meal that Jesus ate, but a similar meal in anticipation of it. Jesus was on the cross when the paschal lambs were slain, and in his tomb when Israel ate the Passover the following night (see under John 18:28 in my Commentary on John). read more

Expository Notes of Dr. Thomas Constable - Luke 22:7

The Jews slew their Passover lamb on the fourteenth of Nisan and ate it after sundown. Sundown began the fifteenth. The fourteenth would have been Thursday until sundown. This verse marks the transition to Thursday from Wednesday, the day on which Jesus had His controversy with the leaders in the temple and gave the Olivet Discourse. This is another of Luke’s benchmarks that signals Jesus’ relentless movement toward the Cross.Luke evidently referred to this day as the day of unleavened bread... read more
