Psalms 118This is the last in this series of the Egyptian Hallel psalms (Psalms 113-118). It describes a festal procession to the temple to praise and sacrifice to the Lord. The historical background may be the dedication of the restored walls and gates of Jerusalem in Ezra and Nehemiah’s time, following the return from Babylonian captivity, in 444 B.C. Again, it is the king who speaks, closing the ceremony with the following prayer."Thou art my God, and I will give thanks unto thee:Thou art my God, I will exalt thee.Oh give thanks unto Jehovah; for he is good.For his lovingkindness endureth forever."The psalm ends with the same verse with which it began. The newly enthroned king acknowledges his status as a servant of God, promising to give thanks to Him and to exalt Him. read more
