Joseph Benson's Commentary of the Old and New Testaments - Revelation 15:2-4

Revelation 15:2-4. I saw as it were a sea of glass mingled with fire It was before clear as crystal, (Revelation 4:6,) but is now mingled with fire Emblematical of the judgments whereby God’s enemies were about to be devoured; and them that had gained Or were gaining, as τους νικωντας rather means; the victory over the beast and his image And not submitted to his tyranny or religion, having steadfastly refused, though at the expense of their property, liberty, and lives, amidst so... read more

Bridgeway Bible Commentary - Revelation 15:1-8

15:1-16:21 THE SEVEN BOWLS OF WRATHThe many visions so far recorded in Revelation have pictured God’s judgments in many ways, each time adding a little more detail as the climax approaches. The visions of the seven bowls of God’s wrath (or the seven last plagues) repeat to some extent what has been said before, but they place more emphasis on the climax. The end has come. People have not heeded God’s warnings, nor have they repented. All that remains for them now is the terrible experience of... read more

Coffman Commentaries on the Bible - Revelation 15:2

And I saw as it were a sea of glass mingled with fire; and them that come off victorious from the beast, and from his image, and from the number of his name, standing by the sea of glass, having harps of God.As it were a sea of glass mingled with fire ... Rist and a number of others believe that there is an indirect reference here to the Red Sea,[15] through which God delivered the first Israel from the wrath of Pharaoh; and the typology certainly fits, but Beckwith declared such an... read more

Thomas Coke Commentary on the Holy Bible - Revelation 15:1-8

Revelation 15:1-8. I saw another sign in heaven, &c.— God's judgments upon the kingdom of the beast, or antichristian empire, are hitherto denounced and described only in general terms, under the figures of harvest and vintage. A more particular account of them follows under the emblem of seven vials which are called the seven last plagues of God, &c. Revelation 15:1. These seven last plagues must necessarily fall under the seventh and last trumpet, or the third and last woe trumpet; so... read more

Expository Notes of Dr. Thomas Constable - Revelation 15:2

John again "saw" (cf. Revelation 15:1; Revelation 15:5) the sea of glass that was similar to crystal (Revelation 4:6; cf. Exodus 24:10; Ezekiel 1:22), though here he wrote that it also had fire in it. The sea most likely represents chaotic evil (cf. Revelation 4:6). The fire suggests the judgment that is about to come. Another view is that the fiery sea represents the persecution by the beast during the Tribulation. [Note: McGee, 5:1017.] The people standing on this sea appear to be the... read more

John Dummelow's Commentary on the Bible - Revelation 15:1-8

The Seven Angels of the BowlsThe crisis of the book is drawing near. The enemies of Christ and His Church—Satan, the empire, and the Provincial Government—have been shown in their power and cruelty. In Revelation 14 these were left standing in their might, while the blessed safety of the people of God was pictured. In this chapter is described the approach of the judgments which are about to fall on the empire and on the heathen world.1-4. Seven angels appear, they to whom are committed the... read more

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers - Revelation 15:2

(2) And I saw as it were a sea of glass mingled with fire.—The wild beast rose out of the sea (Revelation 13:1); the evil-hearted woman sits upon many waters (Revelation 17:1); they draw strength from the wild, and ungoverned, and short-sighted impulses of human passion; in opposition to this near the throne of God is the calm and translucent sea of God’s counsels of righteousness and love, now clear as crystal, now ruddy with the fire of righteous indignation, the expression of His eternal... read more
