Introduction

A.M. 3404. B.C. 600.

The prophet proceeds in this chapter both to magnify and to justify the destruction that God was bringing upon his people; to show how grievous it would be, and yet how righteous.

(1,) He represents the judgments coming as being so very terrible, that, notwithstanding the infamy of their dead bodies being given to the fowls and beasts, many would prefer death to life, Jeremiah 8:1-3 .

(2,) He shows the astonishing stupidity and obstinacy of this people, who neither regarded God’s oracles, providences, nor their own consciences, but, in the face of desolating judgments, persisted in their wicked practices, without fear or shame, Jeremiah 8:4-12 .

(3,) He describes the great confusion and consternation into which the invasion of the Chaldeans would throw the whole land, Jeremiah 8:13-17 .

(4,) The prophet himself bitterly bewails their miserable and hopeless state, Jeremiah 8:18-22 .
