Introduction

A.M. 4037. A.D. 33.

In the preceding chapter we had an account of several discourses of Christ with the scribes and Pharisees; here we have his discourse concerning them.

(1,) He allows their office, Matthew 23:2 , Matthew 23:3 .

(2,) He warns his disciples against imitating their hypocrisy and pride, Matthew 23:4-12 .

(3,) He denounces divers woes on them for their blindness, hypocrisy, and iniquity, Matthew 23:13-33 .

(4,) He passes sentence upon Jerusalem, and foretels the destruction of the city and temple, especially for the sin of persecution, Matthew 23:34-39 .
