Founded, 1140, by Alexander, Bishop of Lincoln, for canons of the Order of Saint Augustine (Black Canons). Henry VIII reserved most of the property for a college which was later suppressed; no register of Dorchester Abbey now exists. The church as it stands today was built by the Augustinian Canons.
