In history, period of the French Revolution inaugurated November 10, 1793, when an actress, typifying the "Goddess of Reason," was enthroned upon the high altar of Notre Dame Cathedral, Paris; and ending when the Law of February 21, 1795, restored some measure of religious liberty. Thomas Paine wrote his "Age of Reason" in a French prison, 1794; it is a rough-and-ready presentment of Deism.
