Confessor, apostle of Switzerland, died near Lake of Thun, Switzerland, c112Legend relates that Beatus was baptized in England by the Apostle Barnabas, ordained in Rome by Saint Peter, and sent to Switzerland. Another version states that he was an Irish monk who accompanied Saint Columban to Switzerland, and lived in solitude in a cave above the Lake of Thun. His story is interwoven with extracts from the life of Saint Beatus of Vendome, but the two are distinct. For years his cave was a place of pilgrimage; after the Reformation his cult was transferred to the chapel at Lungern in Obwalden. Feast, Berne, May 9,.
