An economic and political system of social reorganization. It is opposed to socialism which brands private ownership of productive goods as unjust and immoral. Christian socialism is based upon private ownership, and stresses, like socialism, the social solidarity and social duties. It is one with socialism in the program of reorganization of society. But it carries out this program by inculcation of social duties arising from social relations between the rich and the poor. Christian religion, in that sense, has a social tendency, and is Christian socialism. The application of these fundamental Christian principles varies according to economic systems. These reject collective ownership of all productive goods, but are not agreed in how far the State might monopolize particular productive goods. There are three known political parties of Christian Socialism, the Christian Social Party in England, the Austrian Catholic Party founded by Dr. Lueger, and the Christian Social Party of conservative Evangelicals in Germany.
