Confessor, founder of the Order of Somaschi, born Venice, Italy, 1481; died Somascha, 1537. He joined the army; was taken prisoner, but was miraculously liberated. He studied theology and was ordained priest, 1518. He founded hospitals, orphanages, and institutes for fallen women.
