(September 17, 1826 - June 20, 1866) Christian mathematician. The recognized master in the study of surfaces. Founded the surfaces designated by his name, and a method of non-Euclidean geometry. Put the definite integral on a plane independent of differential calculus. Established the basis of a theory of the functions of complex variables.
