Theologian and scientist, born near Dublin, Ireland, 1834; died Aberdeen, Scotland, 1906. Educated at Castleknock College, he entered the priesthood and occupied the chair of theology at Maynooth, 1857-1874, when he was made professor of natural philosophy at the Catholic University of Ireland, becoming rector, 1883. He was assistant commissioner under the Educational Endowments Act, served on the Board of Intermediate Education, and became a member of the Senate, Fellow, and finally Vice-chancellor of the Royal University of Ireland. He was an authority on electricity. Among his writings are: "Geology and Revelation" (1870) and "Gleanings in Science" (1888).
