Founder of Louisiana, born Villemarie, Montreal, 1661; died Havana, Cuba, 1706. He was a brilliant soldier and sailor, fighting against the English, and capturing Fort Rupert, Fort Nelson, and Fort Pemaquid, and the coastal settlements in Newfoundland. In 1698 he sailed from Brest and established a French colony on the Bay of Biloxi, Louisiana. While in Cuba obtaining reinforcements for an attack on the Carolinas he died of yellow fever.
