He later went from Jerusalem to Asia Minor, where he supervised the establishment and government of churches. Exiled to Patmos, he wrote the Apocalypse or Revelation there; after his return to Ephesus he wrote his Gospel and Epistles. He lived to an advanced age, and is believed by some to be immortal, this belief being founded on the passage in Scripture (John 21), "So I will have him to remain till I come, what is it to thee?"
