Erected as the Vicariate Apostolic of Indian Territory East of the Rocky Mountains on July 19, 1850. Name changed to the Vicariate Apostolic of Kansas in 1857. Elevated to the diocese of Leavenworth on May 22, 1877, covering 12,524 square miles, a suffragan of Saint Louis. Name changed to the diocese of Kansas City, Kansas on May 22, 1891, back to the diocese of Leavenworth on March 5, 1897, and then to the diocese of Kansas City on May 10, 1947.
