Established as a Prefecture Apostolic in 1824. Elevated to the Vicariate Apostolic of Alabama and the Floridas on August 29, 1825. Elevated to the diocese of Mobile on May 15, 1829, a suffragan of the archdiocese of New Orleans. The name was changed to the diocese of Mobile-Birmingham on April 20, 1954.
