While the beginnings of the see date from the 6th and 7th centuries with the foundation of the dioceses of Dunwich and Elmham, it was formally founded in 1094 with Herbert Losinga as first bishop. The last Catholic bishop before dissolution was John Hopton (1554-1558). It was resurrected on August 6, 1953 as a suffragen of the archdiocese of Hartford. See also
