Founder of Montreal, born Champagne, France; died Paris, France, 1676. He was sent in command of a company to found Ville-Marie on the Island of Montreal (1642). The settlement was constantly menaced by the Indians, yet for twenty-five years he remained at his post. He attended to the spiritual and temporal wants of his colony, and left it well fortified and civilly organized. Giving it his own rents and dues he returned to France empty-handed.
