An association of flagellants organized among the Spanish peoples of New Mexico and Colorado, dating from the early 19th century, and probably an outgrowth of the Third Order of Saint Francis. Their barbaric penitential practises, which they carried on in public, caused the Archbishop of Santa Fe to order them to disband, 1889. Though greatly weakened, the society continued its practises in secret.
