A German religious social organization originating in Württemberg about the beginning of the 19th century. Many of its members emigrated to America in 1817 under the leadership of Joseph Bliumeler and settled at Zoar, Ohio. They discountenanced military service, oaths, all ceremonies and sacraments in worship, and strove to cultivate an austere piety. Marriage was permitted, but celibacy was recommended. All members were required to pass through a probation, and community of goods was practised.
