HANANEL (‘El is gracious’). The name of a tower on the wall of Jerusalem. It is four times mentioned in OT; in Nehemiah 3:1 in connexion with the repairing, and in 12:39 in connexion with the dedication, of the walls; in Jeremiah 31:38 and Zechariah 14:10 as a boundary of the restored and glorified Jerusalem. In both the passages in Neh. it is coupled with the tower of Hammeah (wh. see), and some have supposed it to be identical with the latter.
