primarily, "to have arrived at, reached to, pertained to," came to denote "what is due to a person, one's duty, what is befitting." It is used ethically in the NT; Ephesians 5:4 , RV, "are (not) befitting," for AV, "are (not) convenient;" Colossians 3:18 , concerning the duty of wives towards husbands, RV, "as is fitting," for AV, "as it is fit."
