Alexander Of (St.) Elpidius,
in Italy, near Rome, was general of the order of Augustinian hermits in 1312, and in 1325 was made archbishop of Ravenna. The time of his death is uncertain. He wrote a treatise on The Imperial Jurisdiction and the Authority of the Roman Pontiff, by order of pope John XXII (Lyons. 1498, in 2 books; Rimini, 1624): — also two other works. See Cave, Hist. John McClintock was born October 27, 1814 in Philadelphia to Irish immigrants, John and Martha McClintock. He began as a clerk in his father's store, and then became a bookkeeper in the Methodist Book Concern in New York. Here he converted to Methodism and considered joining the ministry. McClintock entered the University of Pennsylvania in 1832 and graduated with high honors three years later.
