Allen, William a tradesman of London, whose works were highly esteemed by Bishop Kidder and others, was originally an Independent, but from conviction joined the Church of England in 1658. He died in 1686, at an advanced age. His Works were published at London, folio, in 1707, with a preface concerning the author and his writings, by the bishop of Chichester. John McClintock was born October 27, 1814 in Philadelphia to Irish immigrants, John and Martha McClintock. He began as a clerk in his father's store, and then became a bookkeeper in the Methodist Book Concern in New York. Here he converted to Methodism and considered joining the ministry. McClintock entered the University of Pennsylvania in 1832 and graduated with high honors three years later.
