Anniversary in the Greek and Romish Churches, a name given to the day on which a martyr or saint is commemorated. Also, those days on which special prayer is made, year by year, for the souls of deceased persons, and masses said and alms distributed, are in the Romish Church called anniversaries. The anniversary office (officium anniversarium) is a double office, said only on the first anniversary day after the death. John McClintock was born October 27, 1814 in Philadelphia to Irish immigrants, John and Martha McClintock. He began as a clerk in his father's store, and then became a bookkeeper in the Methodist Book Concern in New York. Here he converted to Methodism and considered joining the ministry. McClintock entered the University of Pennsylvania in 1832 and graduated with high honors three years later.
