Antipaedobaptists (from ἀντί, against, παῖς, child, and βάπτιζω, to baptize), persons who object to the baptism of infants, on the assumption that Christ's commission to baptize appears to them to restrict this ordinance to such only as are taught, or made disciples; and that consequently infants, who cannot be thus taught, ought to be excluded. John McClintock was born October 27, 1814 in Philadelphia to Irish immigrants, John and Martha McClintock. He began as a clerk in his father's store, and then became a bookkeeper in the Methodist Book Concern in New York. Here he converted to Methodism and considered joining the ministry.
