Appleton, Nathaniel D.D., an eminent Congregational minister, was born at Ipswich, Mass., Dec. 9, 1693, graduated at Harvard in 1712, ordained at Cambridge in 1717, in which year he was also elected a fellow of Harvard, which 54 years afterward conferred upon him the second degree it had ever granted of Doctor of Divinity, Increase Mather, 80 years before, being the first admitted to that honor. John McClintock was born October 27, 1814 in Philadelphia to Irish immigrants, John and Martha McClintock. He began as a clerk in his father's store, and then became a bookkeeper in the Methodist Book Concern in New York. Here he converted to Methodism and considered joining the ministry.
