Archibald, Robert a Presbyterian minister, graduated at the College of New Jersey in 1772, and was licensed by Orange Presbytery in 1775. In October, 1778, he was ordained and installed pastor of the Church of Rocky River, where he continued to labor with great success until 1792, when he became an advocate of the doctrine of universal salvation. John McClintock was born October 27, 1814 in Philadelphia to Irish immigrants, John and Martha McClintock. He began as a clerk in his father's store, and then became a bookkeeper in the Methodist Book Concern in New York. Here he converted to Methodism and considered joining the ministry.
