Audenaerd (Or Oudenaerde), Robert Van, a Flemish painter and engraver, was born at Ghent in 1663, and died there. in 1743. He studied. first under Francis van Mierhop, and subsequently with John Cleef. When quite young he visited Rome, and studied with Carlo Maratti, under whose instruction he became a reputable historical painter. He painted several pictures for the churches of Ghent, among which is the great altar-piece in the Church of the Carthusians, representing St. Peter appearing to the monks of that order, considered his best work. In the Church of St. James is a picture of St. Catharine Refusing to Worship the False Gods. John McClintock was born October 27, 1814 in Philadelphia to Irish immigrants, John and Martha McClintock. He began as a clerk in his father's store, and then became a bookkeeper in the Methodist Book Concern in New York. Here he converted to Methodism and considered joining the ministry. McClintock entered the University of Pennsylvania in 1832 and graduated with high honors three years later.
