Barroll, William a missionary of the Church of England, was a native of Wales. He was.licensed to preach by the bishop of London, and immediately on his arrival in Maryland succeeded his uncle, the Rev. Hugh Jones, in the rectorship of North Sassafras Parish, Cecil Co. When the livings were taken awav from the clergy in Maryland in 1776, he removed to Elkton, Md., and taught school for the support of his family. John McClintock was born October 27, 1814 in Philadelphia to Irish immigrants, John and Martha McClintock. He began as a clerk in his father's store, and then became a bookkeeper in the Methodist Book Concern in New York. Here he converted to Methodism and considered joining the ministry. McClintock entered the University of Pennsylvania in 1832 and graduated with high honors three years later.
