Bellermann Christian Friederich a Protestant theologian and scholar of Germany, son of Johann Joachim, was born at Erfurt, July 8, 1793. He was from 1818 to 1825 pastor of the Protestants of Lisbon; travelled in Portugal and Spain, and went to Naples in 1827 as chaplain of the Prussian ambassador; and returned to Berlin in 1835, in order to assume the pastoral charge of the parish of St. Paul. He died at Berlin, Feb. 6, 1874. John McClintock was born October 27, 1814 in Philadelphia to Irish immigrants, John and Martha McClintock. He began as a clerk in his father's store, and then became a bookkeeper in the Methodist Book Concern in New York. Here he converted to Methodism and considered joining the ministry. McClintock entered the University of Pennsylvania in 1832 and graduated with high honors three years later.
