Bethisy De Mezieres Henri Beneoit Jules De a French theologian, brother of count Eugene Eustace, was born in 1744. He embraced the ecclesiastical profession, was appointed in 1780 bishop of Uzes, and. became in 1789 deputy of the clergy of the bailiwick of Nismes to the States-General, where he showed himself a zealous defender of the ancient privileges of his order. He emigrated in 1792, retired to England, and there distinguished himself by his opposition to the Concordat and all the measures held by the pope, in concert with Napoleon and Louis XVIII, relating to the Church of France. John McClintock was born October 27, 1814 in Philadelphia to Irish immigrants, John and Martha McClintock. He began as a clerk in his father's store, and then became a bookkeeper in the Methodist Book Concern in New York. Here he converted to Methodism and considered joining the ministry. McClintock entered the University of Pennsylvania in 1832 and graduated with high honors three years later.
