Blindfold
(περικαλύπτω, to cover about, sc. the eyes). This treatment which our Saviour received from his persecutors originated from a sport which was common among children in ancient times, in which it was the practice first to blindfold, then to strike, then to ask who gave the blow, and not to let the person go until he had named the one who had struck him. It was used in reproach of our blessed Lord, as a prophet or divine teacher, and to expose him to ridicule (Lu 22:64).

John McClintock was born October 27, 1814 in Philadelphia to Irish immigrants, John and Martha McClintock. He began as a clerk in his father's store, and then became a bookkeeper in the Methodist Book Concern in New York. Here he converted to Methodism and considered joining the ministry. McClintock entered the University of Pennsylvania in 1832 and graduated with high honors three years later.
