a German prelate, lived. about the middle of the 11th century. Henry IV, emperor of Germany, made him bishop of Halberstadt in 1060, and in the following year sent him to reconcile certain differences which existed between Alexander II and Honorius II. Burchard, without regard to the wishes of his sovereign, .decided in favor of Alexander, and on his return to Germany took sides with the enemies of Henry IV, and waged a hard battle against him. John McClintock was born October 27, 1814 in Philadelphia to Irish immigrants, John and Martha McClintock. He began as a clerk in his father's store, and then became a bookkeeper in the Methodist Book Concern in New York. Here he converted to Methodism and considered joining the ministry. McClintock entered the University of Pennsylvania in 1832 and graduated with high honors three years later.
