Camail, in ecclesiastical usage, is a French name for
(1) a tippet or mozetta of black silk, worn by French clergy, but edged, lined, or furred to mark canons.
(2) An aumusse, or cape of fur, adopted by the English dignitaries, with edging of the animal's tail, or pendants, and worn by canons in a modified form in the 15th century. SEE ALMUTIUM.

John McClintock was born October 27, 1814 in Philadelphia to Irish immigrants, John and Martha McClintock. He began as a clerk in his father's store, and then became a bookkeeper in the Methodist Book Concern in New York. Here he converted to Methodism and considered joining the ministry.
