a Presbyterian minister, was a graduate of Washington and Jefferson College, and also of the Western Theological Seminary. On completing his education, he was called to the pastorate of the Providence Missionary Church: in Allegheny, Pa. He was for a time professor of Hebrew and Oriental literature in the seminary. John McClintock was born October 27, 1814 in Philadelphia to Irish immigrants, John and Martha McClintock. He began as a clerk in his father's store, and then became a bookkeeper in the Methodist Book Concern in New York. Here he converted to Methodism and considered joining the ministry.
