Chapel (מַקדָּשׁ , mikdash´, holy place), a general name for a sanctuary (as it is elsewhere rendered) or place of worship, occurs in Am 7:13, where Bethel is called "the king's chapel" by one of the idol priests, because there the kings of Israel paid idolatrous worship to the golden calves. In 1 Macc. 1:47, the Greek word is εἰδωλεῖον, and in 2 Macc. 10:2; 11:3, τέμενος; both used in a similar sense.
