Chun
[pron. Cun] (Heb. Kun, כּוּן, deriv. uncertain; Sept. ἐκλεκτός, Vulg. Chun), a Syrian city mentioned in connection with Tibhath, as one of the "cities of Hadarezer," from which David procured brass for building the Temple (1Ch 18:8). In the parallel passage (2Sa 8:8) these two cities are called respectively Betah and BEROTHAI. It is perhaps the same with the Conna mentioned in the Itin. Antonizi as situated between Laodicea and Baalbek. The rendering of the Sept. seems to imply that instead of "from Chun" (מַכּוּן) it had read Berod (בּרוֹד, q. d. בָּבוּר, i.e. בָּחוּר, choice); but Josephus supports the present Heb. text (Μάχωνι, Ant. 7, 5, 3). John McClintock was born October 27, 1814 in Philadelphia to Irish immigrants, John and Martha McClintock. He began as a clerk in his father's store, and then became a bookkeeper in the Methodist Book Concern in New York. Here he converted to Methodism and considered joining the ministry. McClintock entered the University of Pennsylvania in 1832 and graduated with high honors three years later.
