Cocquelin, Nicolas a French poet and theologian, was born at Corberie, near Lassay, district of Orne, in 1640. He was chancellor of the Church, and of the University of Paris, and sought to prevent the revocation of the edict of Nantes. He died at Paris in 1693, leaving Interpretation des Psaumes et des Cantiques (Paris, 1686; Bordeaux, 1731; Limoges, s.v. ): — Le Manuel d'Epictete (Paris, 1688), mostly in verse: — Traite de ce qui est di aux Puissances (ibid. 1690).. John McClintock was born October 27, 1814 in Philadelphia to Irish immigrants, John and Martha McClintock. He began as a clerk in his father's store, and then became a bookkeeper in the Methodist Book Concern in New York. Here he converted to Methodism and considered joining the ministry.
