Costa, Lorenzo (the Elder)
an Italian painter, was born ,at Ferrara about 1450. He was instructed in the school of Francesco Francia, and then went to Bologna. His first work there was The Martyrdom of St. Sebastian, in the church of San Petronio. He also painted an altar-piece, which was considered very fine. He particularly excelled in his countenances of men, as may be seen from those of The Apostles at San Petronio, and from his St. Jerome. He died about 1530. See Hoefer, Nouv. Biog. John McClintock was born October 27, 1814 in Philadelphia to Irish immigrants, John and Martha McClintock. He began as a clerk in his father's store, and then became a bookkeeper in the Methodist Book Concern in New York. Here he converted to Methodism and considered joining the ministry. McClintock entered the University of Pennsylvania in 1832 and graduated with high honors three years later.
