Crane, James Lyon a Congregational minister, was born at Leesville, Ohio, February 25, 1822. He received his preparatory education at Cleveland heights Academy, and until 1864 was a farmer and manufacturer in Berea and Oberlin. He was ordained as an evangelist at Morenci, Michigan, November 22, 1865; was acting pastor there until 1867; at Adams from 1867 to 1872; at Bedford from 1873 to 1876; at Michigan Centre and Napoleon from 1876 until his death, August 15, 1877.

John McClintock was born October 27, 1814 in Philadelphia to Irish immigrants, John and Martha McClintock. He began as a clerk in his father's store, and then became a bookkeeper in the Methodist Book Concern in New York. Here he converted to Methodism and considered joining the ministry.
