Crete (Ac 2:11) or Cre'tian (Tit 1:12 and subscr.), a Cretan (Κρής), or inhabitant of the island of CRETE SEE CRETE (q.v.). Treatises on the notoriously bad character of this people (referred to in the latter passage) have been written in Latin by Hollebeck (Lugd. B. 1798), Peffinger (Argent. 1701), Schmidt (Lips. 1673), and Steger (Lips. 1684).

John McClintock was born October 27, 1814 in Philadelphia to Irish immigrants, John and Martha McClintock. He began as a clerk in his father's store, and then became a bookkeeper in the Methodist Book Concern in New York. Here he converted to Methodism and considered joining the ministry.
