Dale, Hervey Smith a Baptist minister, was born at Danvers, Massachusetts, in 1812. He graduated from Brown University in 1834, and from Union Theological Seminary in 1841; was ordained the same year, and settled at Newport, Ohio, until 1851; was pastor at Lebanon for several years, from 1852; in 1856 became agent for the Western Baptist Educational Society; and died in Cincinnati in 1857. John McClintock was born October 27, 1814 in Philadelphia to Irish immigrants, John and Martha McClintock. He began as a clerk in his father's store, and then became a bookkeeper in the Methodist Book Concern in New York. Here he converted to Methodism and considered joining the ministry.
