a missionary bishop of the Church of England, was born at Nottingley, near Pontefract, in 1795, and was the son of James Dealtry, descended from the ancient family of Dealtry of Lofthouse Hall, near Wakefield, Yorkshire. He was educated at St. Catharine's Hall, Cambridge, where he graduated as LL.B. in 1828; was created archdeacon at Calcutta in 1835, and held that office until consecrated bishop of Madras, in 1849. John McClintock was born October 27, 1814 in Philadelphia to Irish immigrants, John and Martha McClintock. He began as a clerk in his father's store, and then became a bookkeeper in the Methodist Book Concern in New York. Here he converted to Methodism and considered joining the ministry. McClintock entered the University of Pennsylvania in 1832 and graduated with high honors three years later.
