Garden-House
is the rendering of the A.V. at 2Ki 9:27, of בֵּית הִגָּן; where, however, a place is rather denoted. SEE BETH-HAGGAN.
Garden-houses are usual in the East, especially in the grounds of kings and wealthy persons. In Song 1:16, the bride, looking out from her boudoir, into the gayly-planted court-yard, acknowledges the taste and affection of her beloved as she spies the summer-house, all shaded with verdure, and containing the divan (עֶרֶשׂ), that invited to the luxurious repose of which Orientals are so fond. John McClintock was born October 27, 1814 in Philadelphia to Irish immigrants, John and Martha McClintock. He began as a clerk in his father's store, and then became a bookkeeper in the Methodist Book Concern in New York. Here he converted to Methodism and considered joining the ministry. McClintock entered the University of Pennsylvania in 1832 and graduated with high honors three years later.
